How to jailbreak iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS running iOS 5.1 on Windows and Mac [Guide]

Well it didn’t took long, just hours after Apple released iOS 5.1 to public Dev-Team announced that they have updated their RedSn0w tool and it can now jailbreak iOS 5.1 on devices older than iPhone 4S and iPad 2. That means if you have an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, you can simply jailbreak your device using RedSn0w. This jailbreak will be tethered at the moment, that means you will have to connect your iPhone to RedSn0w on your computer to boot on every reboot. Update: If you have to unlock your device then don’t forget to preserve your baseband by creating a custom IPSW through Redsn0w.

To preserve your baseband open Redsn0w and click on ‘Extras’ button. Now click on ‘Custom IPSW’ button and select iOS 5.1 firmware you have downloaded (links below). Let RedSn0w do its job, after it is complete click on ‘Pwned DFU’ and then continue from 2nd step below.

Note: Don’t forget to back up your data before jailbreaking your device. This tutorial is for Mac and Windows users both.

First of all close iTunes, and connect your device to your PC or Mac.

1 ) Once you have downloaded latest version of RedSn0w from the links above and are running iOS 5.1 on your iPhone, open RedSn0w. Now click on ‘Jailbreak’ button on your screen.

2 ) Turn your iPhone off and click ‘Next’ button on your screen to continue.

3 ) Now carefully press the power button on your iDevice for 3 seconds.

4 ) Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds.

5 ) Without releasing the home button, release the power button. Keep the power button pressed for 15 seconds.

6 ) Now after you see “Exploiting with limera1n” on your screen, release the home button and wait.

  • Your device should reboot now. Be patient
  • You should now see “Preparing Jailbreak data…” on your screen.

7 ) Now after RedSn0w has finished preparing data for your jailbreak, the following screen should appear on your PC. Check “Install Cydia” from this screen and click on “Next”.

8 ) Now you should see the following screen on your PC. Wait while RedSn0w uploads jailbreak data to your device. Be patient it should take 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Your device will reboot now.

As this is a tethered jailbreak (that means you will have to do the following two steps every time you reboot your iOS device) you should follow the steps below.

1 ) Open RedSn0w and click on ‘Extras’ button your your screen.

2 ) Now click on “Just Boot” button and click on next. Your device should run normally, and you will see Cydia on your homescreen.

Alternatively, you can install SemiTether tweak from Cydia on your iOS device, After installing SemiTether you will be able to make calls, send text messages, use stock and third party apps.
