How to jailbreak iPod touch 3rd and 4th Generation running iOS 5.1 on Windows and Mac [guide]

If you have (or want to) upgrade you iPod touch 3rd or 4th generation to iOS 5.1 then you might also want to jailbreak it. Dev-Team has updated their RedSn0w tool to version 0.9.10b6 today to add the ability to tethered jailbreak iOS 5.1 through it. Currently only devices older than iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are supported, that means both iPod touch models can be jailbreaked though it. Follow the instructions after the break to successfully tethered jailbreak your iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation.

Things you need:

iOS 5.1 for iPod touch

iPod touch 3rd Generation (link)

iPod touch 4th Generation (link)

RedSn0w 0.910b6

Download (Windows) (Mac)

Note: Don’t forget to back up your data before jailbreaking your device. This tutorial is for Mac and Windows users both.

First of all close iTunes, and connect your device to your PC or Mac.

1 ) Once you have downloaded latest version of RedSn0w from the links above and are running iOS 5.1 on your iPod touch, open RedSn0w. Now click on ‘Jailbreak’ button on your screen.

2 ) Turn your iPod touch off and click ‘Next’ button on your screen to continue.

3 ) Now carefully press the power button on your iDevice for 3 seconds.

4 ) Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds.

5 ) Without releasing the home button, release the power button. Keep the power button pressed for 15 seconds.

6 ) Now after you see “Exploiting with limera1n” on your screen, release the home button and wait.

Your device should reboot now. Be patient
You should now see “Preparing Jailbreak data…” on your screen.

7 ) Now after RedSn0w has finished preparing data for your jailbreak, the following screen should appear on your PC. Check “Install Cydia” from this screen and click on “Next”.

8 ) Now you should see the following screen on your PC. Wait while RedSn0w uploads jailbreak data to your device. Be patient it should take 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Your device will reboot now.

As this is a tethered jailbreak (that means you will have to do the following two steps every time you reboot your iOS device) you should follow the steps below.

1 ) Open RedSn0w and click on ‘Extras’ button your your screen.

2 ) Now click on “Just Boot” button and click on next. Your device should run normally, and you will see Cydia on your homescreen.

Alternatively, you can install SemiTether tweak from Cydia on your iOS device, After installing SemiTether you will be able to send text messages, use stock and third party apps.
