Apple has released iOS 6.0.1 and it is already available for download. Although it just came out you can jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 using RedSn0w. Remember iOS 6.0.1 is an incremental update and does not bring any new features to iOS devices. If you haven’t updated to iOS 6.0.1 then we would recommend that you stay on the iOS version you are using right now.
However if you have already upgraded to iOS 6.0.1 or you have to upgrade due to some bug you are facing on current version of iOS you can upgrade and then tethered jailbreak it using the method I am going to show you in this post. This jailbreak solution of iOS 6.0.1 only works for A4 devices including iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th generation. A5 devices including iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 2 or new, and iPod touch 5th generation are not supported. This guide for is for Mac as well as Windows users.
Remember: This is a tethered jailbreak, that means you will need to connect your iOS device to RedSn0w on every reboot. Also, if you need to unlock your iPhone in order to use it – stay away from iOS 6.0.1 and this guide. – [See update below]
Ready? Let’s Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 now.
Things you need:
- RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 [Mac/Windows]
- iOS 6.0.1 for your device. Download it from here.
- iOS 6.0 for your device. Download it from here
Step 1. After you have downloaded RedSn0w for your Mac or Windows machine, extract and launch it. Windows users should open RedSn0w in administrator mode to avoid any errors. OS X Mountain Lion users should press Ctrl key and then click on RedSn0w icon and then on ‘Open’.
Step 2. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to computer and put it into DFU mode. After that open RedSn0w and make sure your device is showing up in it.
Step 3. On RedSnow click on the Extras button and then on the select IPSW button. From the window that opens search for the IPSW file of iOS 6.0 [not iOS 6.0.1] for your device, click on it and then click on the ‘Open’ button. If you don’t have iOS 6.0 IPSW then download it here.
Step 4. After RedSn0w has been pointed to the correct iOS 6.0 IPSW file, it is ready to jailbreak iOS 6.0.1. Go back and then from the main page of RedSn0w click on the ‘Jailbreak’ button. RedSn0w will now prepare files for the iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak and then ask you if you want to install certain things on your device. Make sure Cydia is tick marked and click on the next button to proceed to jailbreak iOS 6.0.1.
Step 5. Now Jailbreak process will begin. After a few moments your device will show the lock screen. Place your iPhone or iPod touch into DFU mode at this point.
Step 6. Now connect your iOS device to your computer and open RedSn0w. Click on the ‘Extras’ button and then on Just boot. Now you will see the RedSn0w logo on your device while it is rebooting.
Step 7. When it reboots you will be able to run and use Cydia on your device. If Cydia is not running turn your device off and repeat step 6.
Enjoy!
