Apple’s iOS App Store, which was launched back in 2008 is undoubtedly the most successfully marketplace of today for any platform. Apple never misses a oppurtunity of announcing the achievements of its iTunes App Store, which provides one click app downloads to over 100 million iOS devices.
Today Apple has announced that the App Store has served a total of 40 billion app downloads, 20 billion of which were made in the year 2012 alone. 2 billion apps were downloaded from the App Store in December 2012 alone, which consisted of the holiday season. This is a huge number considering the store was launched 2008 and only serves Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. In the press release Apple also announced that the App Store now has 500 million active accounts.
For those 40 billion downloads, which includes both paid and free apps Apple paid a sum of over 7 billion to developers of these applications. Apple’s press release mentions some success stories of the App Store from past years including the husband and wife team of Imangi Studios whose Temple Run game was downloaded 75 million times. Other studios Apple has mentioned include Backflip studios and Supercell, EA, Marvel, Ubisoft, Autodesk and more.
Regarding this milestone achieved by the App Store Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue said that “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
The iOS App Store has seen a massive growth in the past few years. The App Store now has over 775,000 apps available to users from 155 countries around the world 300,000 of which are dedicated for the iPad tablet.

Record-Breaking December with Over Two Billion Downloads
CUPERTINO, California―January 7, 2013―Apple® today announced that customers have downloaded over 40 billion apps*, with nearly 20 billion in 2012 alone. The App Store℠ has over 500 million active accounts and had a record-breaking December with over two billion downloads during the month. Apple’s incredible developer community has created over 775,000 apps for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® users worldwide, and developers have been paid over seven billion dollars by Apple.
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
In 2012, the husband and wife team at Imangi Studios saw their game Temple Run downloaded more than 75 million times; Backflip Studios and Supercell, two emerging game development studios, brought in over $100 million combined for their leading freemium titles DragonVale and Clash of Clans; and emerging services including Uber, Flipboard, HotelTonight, and AirBnB attracted millions of users on iOS. Companies including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Autodesk, Marvel and Major League Baseball continued to expand their iOS offerings, while developers like JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Interactive and Bottle Rocket Apps continued to push the boundaries of what iOS apps can do.
