Apple announced its record breaking financial results yesterday and in the earnings call its CEO Tim Cook addressed a few rumors about the upcoming and current models of iPhones, which have been circulating in the market. Firstly he replied to a question related to Apple cutting supplies of iPhone 5 due to short demand, which was reported by WSJ earlier this month. Tim Cook said that it is impossible to derive anything about Apple’s business including the iPhone business from data coming from any part of its supply chain. You can find the full textual responses here.
Here’s what he said.
“Months of rumors about order cuts and so forth, so let me take a moment to comment on these. No comment on any particular rumor.
I suggest its good to question the accuracy of any kind of rumor about build plans. Even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to interpret that data point as to what it meant to our business. The supply chain is very complex and we have multiple sources for things. Yields can vary, supplier performance can vary. There is an inordinate long list of things that can make any single data point not a great proxy for what is going on.”
Next he replied to a question that was related to Apple releasing a cheaper and more affordable iPhone in the near future. He responded with his usual answer that we have been hearing from quite some time now:
“The most important thing for Apple is to make products that impact people’s lives. We don’t seek revenue for revenue’s sake.”
Lastly, when a question about iPhone with a 4.8-inch display came up, which was based on recent rumors of iPhone Math Tim Cook said that he and his company thinks that the current size of iPhone 5, which features a 4-inch display is the right one and provides the best single hand use experience to the users.
“The iPhone 5 screen offers a new four-inch retina display. It also provides a larger screen without sacrificing one-handed use. We put a lot of thought into screen sizes and we think we picked the right one.”
