From time to time, Apple updates the list of devices that become “obsolete.” This implies that they will no longer have official technical service, since the company withdraws their support. However, before certain products become obsolete, they are placed on a list called “legacy products.” And according to the MacRumors portal, there are an iPad that could be considered obsolete in no time.
This model was released ten years ago
The MacRumors portal has recently reported that, “according to an internal document obtained by MacRumors”, the 1st generation iPad Air, released ten years ago, “would eventually be added to the obsolete list on May 31.” In the same way that it is said that this first-generation iPad Air could end up on this list, the portal also comments that the Apple Thunderbolt Display monitor, launched in 2011, could also end up following the same path.
“Apple classifies a product as technologically obsolete when more than seven years have passed since the company has stopped its distribution for sale, “they explain. It must be borne in mind that the first iPad Air was discontinued in 2016. In the middle of 2023, before a world conference of developers (next June), many new features that the company has stored in the fridge, and that it has been seven years since it was withdrawn from the market, it makes perfect sense for the company to comment on this movement. However, we will only know if this is going to happen, the day we see the first iPad Air on that list.
When an Apple product has been on the market for some time, but is still officially supported, it is considered an “old product.” Thus, the company categorizes its previous products in two ways: those that continue to receive official support, and those that do not. Currently, and in the absence of Apple adding the first-generation iPad Air to the list of obsolete products, these are the iPad models that Apple considers old:
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch Wi-Fi
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular
- iPad Air Wi-Fi
- iPad Air Wi-Fi+Cellular
- iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi
- iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi+Cellular
- iPad mini 2 Wi-Fi
- iPad mini 2 Wi-Fi+Cellular
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch Wi-Fi
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch Wi-Fi+Cellular
At the moment, the first-generation iPad Air is part of the “Old iPad Products Worldwide” list. In fact, this is the official name that Apple gives to this series of products that, although they have been on the market for years, still continue to receive official technical support. In fact, on the list “Outdated iPad Products Worldwide” we find the following:
- Original iPad (all models)
- iPad 2 (all models)
- iPad 3rd generation (all models)
- iPad 4th generation (all models)
- Original iPad mini (all models)
- iPad mini 3 (all models)
