iOS 17.4 is coming out today and this is everything you need to know

One of the most important iOS software updates is version 17.4, an update that will include numerous changes, such as the ability to install apps outside of the App Store in the European Union thanks to the Digital Application Market (DMA) law. In this situation, it seems that Apple is prepared to launch the Realize Candidate today.

Digital Markets Law

The European Union regulation to allow third-party application stores on its devices has not sat well with Cupertino and, consequently, it is going to wait until the last day to implement this regulation. However, the company has been preparing this movement for months, introducing changes to the App Store Backend to enable the Marketplaces app for release on March 6, 2024.

iOS 17.4 also allows users web browsers have your own engine instead of using Apple's Webkit, another of the points approved by the EU with the DMA. It is expected that in the next few hours the Realize Candidate (RC) will be launched with the aim of correcting the latest errors and including some optimization and performance improvement functionalities. If everything is correct, the final version may be released to everyone on Next Monday, March 4 or Tuesday, March 5that is, one day before the deadline.

What's new in iOS 17.4

For non-EU users, iOS 17.4 includes other changes and new features. For example, the update improves the pstolen device protection with a new option to always require the security delay, adding new variables. Also adds new emojis, transcriptions in Apple Podcast and improvements to CarPlay.

iOS 17 and iPhone 15

Other improvements in iOS 17.4 are as follows:

  • Battery status information: In iOS 17.4, when you go to the “Battery” screen in Settings, you'll see two new menus: Battery Status and Charging Optimization. For the first time, Apple officially indicates 500 complete charge cycles as the discharge limit number. Now, this information is only available on the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro.
  • Disable camera reactions: In iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, Apple has introduced new camera gestures that show 3D reactions, such as a thumbs up, balloons, and even fireworks. However, these reactions are enabled by default, but many users have not liked them, so Apple has added the possibility of disabling it.
  • Virtual card number: The company chaired by Tim Cook has added a new possibility for users who have Apple Cash to have a new option to spend their balance, even if Apple Pay is not available. Thanks to this, you can obtain information about the card number, generate new card models and security codes, among other new functionalities. These options have been available on the Apple Card credit card since its launch, but the debit card is now included in Apple Cash. Unfortunately, these services will not be available in Spain at the moment, because Apple Card has not been released outside the United States.

When the official launch of iOS 17.4 occurs, we will analyze first-hand the new updates to Apple's new Marketplace, a milestone in iOS without a doubt.
